Our Writing

Roll & Write Fiction
April 29, 2014

In our last unit of study we learned about the elements of story grammar (characters, setting, problem, solution) and wrote our own fiction stories.  We turned this writing piece into a game by using Story Starter Cubes by Learning Resources.   We took are chances and rolled the character cube, the setting cube the the problem cube.  We then had to creatively come up with a solution and ending to our stories.  This was fun and our stories turned out great!  We have typed them in below.  We hope you enjoy reading them!

We used a graphic organizer to plan our writing.
The Fire
Grade 1

One night Police Officer Jack was at the house.  It is summer. He smells smoke!  He turns and he sees a house on fire.  He yelled, "Oh my gosh!"  Police Officer Jack grabs his phone from his pocket.  He quickly dials 911.  He called for help.  The fire trucks put out the fire.

Amusement Park
Grade 1

One day in the summer grandma was at an amusement park.  She is scared of a haunted house.  She doesn't want to go in!  She saw the zombie talk on the phone through the upstairs window.  She finds out that the zombie is not real.  She now goes into the haunted house.

In Our Opinion
March 31, 2014

This winter, we explored expressing our opinions.  We wrote books about Vermont with the aim of persuading people to come to Vermont.  We learned how to write a hook to draw our readers in and how to write a catchy conclusion inviting our readers to take action.  Here is what one student wrote.  You just might what to take his advice!

Lake Champlain

Have you ever wanted to fish and swim in Vermont?  I believe that Lake Champlain is the best lake in the whole world.  One reason is that you can catch a fish in a minute.  Catfish and Bass are fish that you can catch.  You can swim too!  The water is just right.  The water is clear and you can see fish.  When you are in Vermont go to Lake Champlain.  Please go!

Teaching Books
December 20, 2013

In November and December students wrote books that taught their readers about something they knew a lot about.  Each book was organized into chapters with headings, included pictures and labels, and had introductions and conclusions.  By writing about what they knew, students develop skills in writing informational texts.

Here a student writes a chapter called My Dog in his book Dogs.

Fall 2013

Students started out the year writing Small Moment Stories as a part of their classrooms' Writer's Workshops.  To start off the unit in the ELL room, we made Heart Maps.  We then used our Heart Maps to get ideas for writing stories.  Our Small Moment Stories were spread over three pages with a beginning, middle and end.  Students enjoyed writing and sharing about true moments in their lives that they cared about.

We are now writing Nonfiction Chapter Books that teach others about something we know a lot about.  Here a student shows a chapter from his book about Dogs. This chapter is called Puppies and it includes a photograph with labels, two nonfiction features we are learning about.
